About the design

Our class created a scarecrow inspired by two well-known visitors to our school garden, Russell and Steve, the crows who regularly visit our eating area after lunch. Through our commitment to keeping the school grounds clean and wildlife friendly, these crows became comfortable in our environment and soon discovered the delicious snow peas and tomatoes that students had grown from seed and cared for every day.

The scarecrow was designed as a sustainable and durable solution to help protect our garden while respecting local wildlife. Drawing on our Science curriculum learning, students carefully selected waterproof materials that could withstand Queensland weather conditions, ensuring the scarecrow would remain effective and visually appealing over time. This focus on durability also reduced waste by using long-lasting materials rather than items that would need frequent replacement.

Our design represents the important balance between conservation and food production. Rather than discouraging wildlife from our school, the scarecrow helps establish boundaries so both students and local animals can thrive. The project encouraged creativity, problem-solving and environmental responsibility while connecting classroom learning to a real-world challenge.

By combining innovation, sustainability and a story from our own school environment, our scarecrow celebrates the role young Nature Guardians play in protecting gardens, supporting wildlife and creating a more sustainable future for everyone.
